  • This stage is defined as individuals with pulmonary TB reaching a health facility and accessing TB tests (e.g., sputum microscopy, Xpert MTB/RIF) or when appropriate workup is initiated by a healthcare provider for individuals with extrapulmonary or pulmonary TB who might be diagnosed empirically.
  • Care seeking is often delayed because of:
  • cost burden or other access issues
  • discounting or ignoring symptoms
  • lack of knowledge or understanding of the importance of early detection and treatment
  • stigma
  • Delays can lead to higher rates of morbidity, transmission, and mortality.
  • Care provider experience and knowledge can also impact presentation and ultimately diagnosis.

MomConnect is a South African National Department of Health programme with over 20 partners from the public and private sectors.

MomConnect aims to support maternal health through the use of cell phone based technologies integrated into maternal and child health services. The services are free to the user, and messages are available in all 11 official languages. The Novartis Foundation is a philanthropic organization aiming to have a sustainable impact on the health of low-income communities. For the Ghana Telemedicine Program, the foundation partnered with Millennium Promise Alliance, Earth Institute, Columbia University, the Ghana Ministry of Health, Ministry of Communication, National Health Insurance Agency, and Ambulance Service, St. Martin’s Hospital, MedGate, Ericsson and Airtel.

The Ghana Telemedicine Program uses information and communications technology (ICT) to connect community health workers to medical specialists via 24-hour teleconsultation centers. Doctors, nurses and midwives in the teleconsultation centers coach community health workers and advise on the treatment of their patients, helping them manage emergency cases that are beyond their capacity and avoiding unnecessary referrals.
